Traditional chest strap or optical heart rate monitor? Explained thoroughly.

Using a traditional chest strap or measuring heart rate through an optical sensor each have their advantages and disadvantages. Here are the basic differences summarized in understandable terms.

Chest Strap. Heart rate measurement occurs by capturing the electrical discharge generated during heart activity. It's the same physical principle as when you have an EKG done at the doctor's office. By its nature, the traditional chest strap is more accurate and especially more responsive. In practice, when, for example, you start a fast-paced run, the change in heart rate is captured and displayed on the device (watch, app, bike computer, etc.) within 2 - 3 seconds. If this level of precision and almost immediate detection of changes in heart rate is important in your training, then the traditional chest strap is the more suitable solution. The downside is the discomfort of wearing it during long training sessions, slipping off the body, or, in the case of women, the difficulty of wearing it with a sports bra.

Optical Sensor. In this case, LED diodes of the optical sensor penetrate the skin and try to capture the oscillations of blood capillaries caused by the heartbeat. Although this technology has made huge strides in recent years, it cannot immediately detect sudden changes in heart rate due to its physical nature. In practice, for example, after starting a fast-paced run, the change displayed on the device appears slightly later than with a traditional chest strap - usually after 7 - 10 seconds. If you can overlook this minor handicap, heart rate measurement through an optical sensor is a good choice for you. For 95% of the sports community, such measurement is more than sufficient. Moreover, the comfort of wearing it is much greater than with a traditional chest strap.
